Keyword Mapping
One Search, One Page, No Exceptions
Ask most business owners which page on their site is supposed to rank for their most valuable search and you get a pause. The pause is the problem. Google resolves it by picking a page for you, often the wrong one, and switching between candidates when it cannot decide. Keyword mapping is the discipline of making that decision yourself, in writing, before a single page is built or rewritten.
What a keyword map is
A keyword map is a single document that lists every search worth having and assigns each one to exactly one page. Each money page owns a main term and a small set of supporting terms that belong to the same buying intent, and no other page on the site is allowed to claim them in a title, a heading or a link. Supporting articles are mapped beneath the page they serve, on questions that are related but different, so they lift the money page instead of competing with it.
It sounds administrative. It is the most consequential document in an engagement, because every page that follows is built from it and every ranking problem that appears later is diagnosed against it.
Why it has to come first
Three reasons, in order of cost. First, pages compete with each other: two pages that both mention the same service in their titles will trade places in Google for the same search, and neither settles, which is the single most common reason a site with good content ranks badly. Second, the words matter more than the volume: a service can be described three ways by the market, and the map decides which vocabulary the site is built on, measured from what buyers in the area actually type rather than what the industry calls it. Third, the map tells you what not to build: a city page for a town that has no demand, or a service page for a term whose results are all directories, is work that can never pay.
None of those decisions can be made well page by page. They are decisions about the whole site, and they are cheapest before the site exists or before a rewrite begins.
What a real keyword map contains
A map is more than a spreadsheet of terms. The one we build inside Rank Intelligence Engine records a decision for every row, with the evidence behind it.
| Element | What it decides | The evidence behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Term family verdict | Which word the whole site is built on when the market uses several | Search behavior by region, what the ranking pages call it, difficulty, the domain you own |
| Pillar assignment | Which money page owns each main and supporting term | Buying intent grouped so one page can serve it completely |
| Homepage classification | Whether the homepage is a city pillar or a brand hub | Single-city businesses versus multi-area or national ones |
| City qualification | Which areas earn a page and which are declined | Measured demand and a results page a page can actually win |
| Containment fences | Phrases each page may never use in a title or heading | The other pages’ main and supporting terms |
| Supporting post sizing | How many articles each pillar needs and on what questions | Prospect concerns that produce a different results page from the pillar’s |
The fences are the part most maps omit and the part that prevents the most damage. They are what lets a site publish freely afterward without any new post quietly taking a money page’s search.
What goes wrong without one
The symptoms are familiar to anyone who has watched their rankings for a few months. A search that ranked on page one with the homepage now ranks on page three with a blog post. A service page and a location page that both mention the same service take turns. A new article, written with the best intentions, outranks the page it was meant to support and converts nothing because it was never built to. Each of those is a mapping failure, and each is corrected by deciding who owns what and enforcing it, not by writing more.
How the map is used after it is built
Every money page is written to its row: the main term in the title and heading, the supporting terms in the body, and nothing that belongs to another row. Every supporting article carries a title checked against the whole map before publication. When rankings are tracked, the map says which page should be ranking for each search, so a switch between pages is caught within days rather than discovered a quarter later. And when the site is audited, the map is the reference the audit is scored against. On a WordPress site this is how the WordPress SEO services stay coherent as the site grows: the map is the constitution, and the pages are built to obey it.
