When a customer asks a whole question, one business gets quoted in the answer and everyone else is skipped.
Answer engine optimization is the work of being the one that gets quoted. We measure it across seven AI engines every month, with the prompts included, so you can check the answer on your own phone.

Answer engine optimization services, or AEO services, make a business the one quoted when a customer asks a whole question of Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok or a voice assistant. The work maps the questions customers ask, audits which the site answers completely, rebuilds pages so each answer is complete and liftable, adds structured data matched by visible text, verifies the business entity, and counts citations on seven engines every month against a baseline taken before the work started. Provided across the United States by AI Search Engine Optimization, led by Phil Belleville, in search since 1995.
Why Good Pages Get Ranked and Never Get Quoted
There is a failure mode we see on nearly every site that comes to us, and it is invisible in a ranking report. The site ranks. Positions look reasonable. And when you ask an AI engine the question that page is supposed to answer, it quotes somebody else.
The cause is almost always completeness. A page can hold position four with a partial answer, because a searcher clicks through, reads on, and finds the rest. An answer engine cannot do that. It has to hand the reader something finished, in one piece, and it will not lift half an answer and hope. So the page that says what something costs, roughly, and then invites you to call for the real number, never gets quoted. The page that answers the question and then makes its case gets quoted constantly.
The second cause is structure. Two pages can contain the same facts and only one is liftable, because in the other the answer is spread across six paragraphs, an image caption and a call to action. Machines will not reassemble that, and the writer never noticed because to a human reader it flowed fine.
The third is verification, and it is the one owners find hardest to believe. An engine that is about to put your business in front of someone checks whether your business can be confirmed. A phone number that appears three different ways across the web, a services list last updated in 2021, pages claiming a presence somewhere you have never worked: any of those can quietly disqualify a good answer. The answer was fine. The business behind it could not be checked.
What Answer Engine Optimization Services Cover
Question mapping
We map the questions your customers actually ask, in their words. Not keyword fragments, whole questions, sourced from reviews, from what people ask AI engines in your category, and from your own sales calls if you have them recorded.
Answer coverage audit
Every mapped question is checked against your site: answered completely, answered partially, or ignored. Partial answers are the biggest single cause of never being quoted, and most sites have far more of them than they expect.
Answer engineering
The pages get rebuilt so that one question has one complete answer in one place, written so a machine can lift it whole. This is craft rather than formatting; an answer that reads as a summary gets quoted, an answer that reads as a teaser does not.
Structured data with visible twins
The markup that tells an engine what the answer is about, with every claim in the code matched by text a visitor can see on the page. Markup that claims something the page does not say is worse than no markup at all.
Entity verification
Answer engines check whether the business behind the answer can be confirmed. Conflicting names, phone numbers, service lists and profiles across the web quietly disqualify good answers, and that gets fixed before the answers get written.
Monthly citation measurement
Counts per engine, against a pre-work baseline, with the prompts included so you can verify them. This is the deliverable most agencies do not offer, because it is the one that can prove them wrong.
How We Run AEO: The Rank Intelligence Engine
The same four stages run on every engagement, applied here to the answer layer. The first one has already happened before you call, which is why work starts in week one rather than after a month of orientation.
- Intelligence. The standing research that runs whether or not anyone has hired us: AI systems measuring, continuously, what the live Google algorithm and each major AI engine actually reward this month.
- Rank Gap Scan. Your site and the competitors beating you, measured against that research, page by page and signal by signal. The output is the specific list of what they have that you do not.
- Authority Build Map. The prioritized roadmap. What changes on the site, what gets built, what entity and trust signals get repaired, and in what order.
- Rank Momentum. Implementation, then monthly measurement across Google rankings, Search Console performance and citation counts on seven AI engines, against a baseline taken before any work started.
How This Differs From AEO Sold as a Product
| Dimension | AEO sold as a product | AEO inside the Rank Intelligence Engine |
|---|---|---|
| What gets optimized | Keyword placement across many pages | One complete, liftable answer per question |
| What gets reported | Rankings, or a single blended AI visibility score | Citation counts per engine with the prompts, plus rankings |
| Structured data | Plugin defaults, often claiming things the page does not say | Authored per page, every claim matched by visible text |
| Coverage | AEO sold as a separate product from SEO and GEO | One programme, because all three rest on being verifiable |
| Who writes the answers | Templated content at volume | Written for the question, then checked against what the engines actually quote |
| Contract | Twelve months, cancellation fees | Month to month; you keep everything built |
Where AEO Sits Beside SEO and GEO
AI SEO is the umbrella. AEO is the question layer, and it is mostly a structural job on your own pages. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the citation layer, and it depends heavily on what independent places on the web say about you. All three rest on the same foundation, which is whether a machine can verify your business, and that is why we run them as one programme rather than selling three.
The practical consequence: a business with excellent AEO and no third-party corroboration gets quoted by AI Overviews and ignored by ChatGPT. If that describes you, the answer is generative engine optimization, not more AEO. If neither is the problem and the site simply is not visible anywhere, start with an AI SEO audit.
Proof You Can Check Before You Call
Phil Belleville has worked in search engine optimization since 1995 and founded Omaha SEO the same year; that agency is a Google Partner with an A plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. He built and sold a website that held more than nine hundred top Google rankings. The marketing sites he runs rank at the top of their own city markets in two of the largest forty cities in the country.

Answer Engine Optimization Questions Owners Ask
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the work of becoming the business that gets quoted when a customer asks a whole question instead of typing a fragment. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and every voice assistant now answer questions directly, and each answer draws on a small number of sources. AEO is about making sure a specific question a customer asks has a specific, complete, quotable answer on your site, structured so a machine can lift it without guessing. It is largely a job on your own pages, which is what separates it from generative engine optimization, and it is the fastest of the three layers to show movement.
How is AEO different from SEO?
Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list. AEO competes to be the answer that appears above the list, or instead of it. The practical difference is completeness. A page can rank at position four with a partial answer, because the searcher clicks through and reads the rest. An answer engine will not quote a partial answer, because it has nowhere to send the reader for the missing half. So AEO rewards pages that answer one question fully in one place, and penalises the common pattern of scattering an answer across six paragraphs and a call to action. Most sites we look at rank reasonably and get quoted almost never, for exactly that reason.
Which engines does AEO cover?
Seven, and we measure all of them: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Grok. They behave differently. AI Overviews leans hardest on what already ranks, so Google position and AEO reinforce each other there. ChatGPT and Perplexity weigh third-party corroboration more heavily, which is why AEO alone will not carry a business that nothing else on the web mentions. Grok and Copilot sit between the two. Reporting a single AI visibility score across all of them hides more than it shows, so you get the count per engine, with the prompts, every month.
How long does AEO take to work?
Structural changes register faster than most search work. Rewriting a page so one question has one complete answer, and marking it up so a machine can find it, typically shows in AI Overviews within four to eight weeks, because AI Overviews draws on pages Google has already crawled and ranked. ChatGPT and Perplexity take longer, usually a quarter or more, because they lean on third-party sources that have to notice you first. We give you a timeline for your situation on the first call and report against it monthly, including the months where a number did not move.
What does an AEO engagement include?
The four stages of the Rank Intelligence Engine, applied to the answer layer. We map the questions your customers actually ask, in their words rather than industry words. We audit which of those questions your site answers, which it answers partially, and which it ignores. We rebuild or write the pages that answer them, structured so the answer is liftable. We add the structured data that tells a machine what the answer is about, with every claim matched by visible text on the page. Then we measure citations across seven engines each month against a baseline taken before the work started.
Do I need AEO if my Google rankings are fine?
Probably, and the businesses in most danger are exactly the ones whose rankings look fine. A strong position on a results page means less every quarter, because a growing share of searches get answered before anyone reaches that page. If you rank well and are never quoted, a competitor who ranks below you is getting the customer at the moment of decision while your position looks healthy in a report. That is the specific failure AEO addresses. The quickest way to find out where you stand is to ask an assistant your own customers’ questions and count who gets named.
Can I do AEO myself?
Some of it, yes, and we will tell you which parts on the call. Rewriting your most important pages so each answers one question completely is work an owner who writes well can do. Structured data and the entity work behind it are harder to get right and easy to get wrong in ways that do active damage, and measurement across seven engines is not practical by hand. If budget is tight we would rather point you at the two changes that matter most and have you make them than take a retainer for work you could do yourself. That conversation is free.
How do you prove AEO is working?
With counts you can reproduce. Every month you get the number of times each of seven engines cited your site or named your business for the prompts your customers use, measured against a baseline taken before any work started, with the prompts included so you can run them on your own phone and see the same answers. You also get Google rankings and Search Console performance for the same pages, because AEO and ranking reinforce each other and separating them would hide the interaction. If a number moves the wrong way the report says so.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No, and the distinction is worth holding onto. AEO is about being the answer, and it is mostly a structural job on your own pages. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about being one of the sources an engine cites, and it depends heavily on what independent places on the web say about you. They overlap because both rest on being verifiable, which is why we run them as one programme rather than two products. A business with excellent AEO and no third-party corroboration will get quoted by AI Overviews and ignored by ChatGPT, which is a common and frustrating pattern.
What kinds of businesses benefit most from AEO?
Any business whose customers ask questions before they buy, which is most considered purchases. Service businesses where the customer is diagnosing a problem before choosing a provider. Business-to-business companies whose buyers research vendors through AI tools before ever filling in a form. Ecommerce sellers whose products invite comparison questions. Professional services where the first question is almost always about process, price or qualification. The common thread is that a question precedes the purchase, because that question is where the answer engine intervenes.
Who does the work?
Phil Belleville leads every engagement from the first call to the monthly report. He has worked in search since 1995 and founded Omaha SEO the same year. The research and drafting run on AI systems he built and directs, more than forty of them, each handling one piece of the work. The systems do the volume; thirty-one years of judgment decides what to act on and what to ignore. There is no account manager between you and the person writing your plan, and no rotating pool of contractors touching your site.
How do we start with answer engine optimization?
With a free thirty-minute call. Before it we check which questions in your market currently get answered by an AI engine, who gets quoted in those answers, and what the biggest structural gap on your site is. On the call you get that read in plain English. If there is a fit you receive a written proposal naming the work, the timeline and the price. If not, you keep the read and can act on it yourself. Nothing is decided on the call, and most people take a few days and ask follow-up questions by email first.
Find Out Which Questions You Are Losing
Thirty minutes, no charge. Before the call we check which questions in your market get answered by an AI engine today, who gets quoted, and where your pages fall short. You leave with that read whether or not we work together.
