Internal Link Audit

The Ranking Gain Most Sites Have Never Taken

Every website owner has been told they need more links from other sites. Almost none have been told that the links already inside their own site are a ranking system they control completely, and that on most WordPress sites that system is pointing the wrong way. An internal link audit is how you find out where your existing authority is going, and how you send it to the pages that make money.

What internal links do that most owners never see

Google treats every link on your site as a vote from one page to another, and it reads the words in the link, the anchor text, as a description of the page it points to. Authority that reaches your site from outside flows along those links. A page with many internal links from relevant pages, described consistently, gathers that authority; a page with none is an orphan the engines rarely revisit. This happens whether or not anyone planned it, which is the problem: on a site that has grown for a few years, the pattern was never planned.

The result, on most sites we examine, is that the pages with the most internal links are the ones the platform generated, such as category archives, tag pages and date archives, while the service page that pays the bills has three links, one of them from the footer. The site is voting for its least valuable pages.

What an internal link audit checks

Our audit runs eighteen checks over every internal link on the site, from a full crawl, and every finding is turned into an exact instruction: this page, this anchor text, this placement. The checks fall into six groups.

Check group What it looks for Why it matters
Equity flow Which pages receive the most links and whether they are the pages that matter Authority pooled on archives and utility pages is authority the money pages never see
Orphans and depth Pages with no inbound links, and pages more than three clicks from the homepage Orphaned and deep pages are crawled rarely and ranked rarely
Anchor text portfolio The words used to link to each page, and how consistent they are Anchors are how the engines learn what a page is about; scattered anchors dilute it
Anchor cannibalization Two pages linked with the same phrase The site is telling Google two pages are about the same thing, and neither wins
Topical silos Whether supporting articles link up to their service page and sideways to each other Clusters that link inward concentrate authority; scattered links leak it
Striking distance Pages ranking between positions four and fifteen A few well-placed links move these onto page one fastest; they are done first

A seventh group compares the site’s link structure with the competitors that already rank, measured from real crawls of their sites rather than a textbook rule, so the target is the field’s actual bar.

Why WordPress sites need this more than most

WordPress generates internal links no one asked for: sidebar widgets, related-post blocks, category and tag archives, author pages, pagination, date archives. Each is a page that collects links, and most are pages that should not rank. The audit separates what the platform created from what a person can edit, so the fixes land where they take: in the content of pages you control, not in a template that regenerates the problem on the next update.

Layout tools add a second complication. Copy hidden in encoded blocks, tabs or accordions can carry links a crawler never follows. The audit reads what the engines receive, not what the editor shows, so a link that looks present in the page builder but is invisible to Google is counted as missing.

What the audit produces, and what gets installed

Two things. A strategic report scored out of 100, with the site’s structure explained in plain English and the biggest leaks named. And a workbook of every change: source page, exact anchor text, exact placement, with the money pages protected so nothing on them is altered by accident. Then the changes are installed on the live site, each one verified against what was ordered, and caches cleared. On a recent client site, 116 link changes went in across 77 pages in one pass; every one was checked live afterward.

This is the fastest ranking gain most sites have never taken because it costs nothing outside the site. No outreach, no new content, no waiting for anyone else: the authority is already there, and the audit simply points it at the pages you want to rank. It is one of the nine diagnoses inside the AI visibility audit and AI SEO audit, and the installation is part of Rank Intelligence Engine‘s fourth step, where the plan becomes a website.
