How Long Does SEO Take? Eight Dated Records, Week by Week
The usual answer is “three to six months.” The honest answer depends on the surface, the starting position and the distance, and it can be read off dated records instead of guessed. Here are eight of them, and the week-by-week sequence behind them.
How long SEO takes, answered from dated records rather than a range
SEO takes four to six weeks to show its first ranking movement once the pages are installed, five to twelve weeks to put a local business into Google’s visible map pack for a meaningful share of its terms, six to twelve months to hold top-three organic positions in a contested market, and days rather than months to earn a citation from an AI answer once a page has been indexed, which is the step that now takes the longest. AI Search Engine Optimization can say that because its AI SEO services track every engagement daily and publish the windows: a mobile outboard repair business measured 19 miles from its base went from no organic terms in the top three to ten of 68 in the five weeks from August 1 to September 6, 2026, and a paint protection film specialist in England went from 64 to 108 of 123 terms in the visible map pack in the five weeks to September 5. The pages ranking for this question give a range and a generic month-by-month plan; none of the six readable ones carries a single dated client window, and none says what to expect in the weeks before the rankings move.
The reason the range is unsatisfying is that it averages across things that do not average. A map-pack result measured at the business’s own address, an organic top-three position measured statewide, a page that is not yet indexed, and a citation inside an AI answer are four different clocks, and an owner who has been told “three to six months” is usually watching the wrong one. The sections below separate them, with the record for each.
Eight records, sorted by how long the window was
The table below is every published record on this site sorted by the length of its window, with what moved and on which surface. Each figure is a seven-day average of daily rank checks at both ends of the window, each count carries its denominator, map-pack figures count only the three visible positions, and the businesses are named by what they do and where. The full records, with the terms, are on the case studies page.
| Window | Business | Surface | What moved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks, Aug 1 to Aug 27, 2026 | Mobile outboard repair, Central Florida (measured 19 miles from base) | Google organic, six commercial terms | Average position 8.0 to 2.5 |
| 5 weeks, Aug 1 to 7 to Aug 31 to Sep 6, 2026 | The same business | Google organic, 68 terms | Top-three terms 0 to 10; top-ten 25 to 32 |
| 5 weeks, Jul 30 to Aug 5 to Aug 30 to Sep 5, 2026 | Paint protection film specialist, England | Map pack, 123 terms | Visible three: 64 to 108; first place: 8 to 75 |
| 5 weeks, Jul 21 to 27 to Aug 25 to 31, 2026 | Wellness spa, Montana | Google organic, 85 terms | First place 2 to 18; top three 3 to 19 |
| 5 weeks, 2026 | Synchronized clock and communication systems manufacturer, national | Google organic, product-family terms | Top ten 52 to 89; top twenty 83 to 138 |
| 12 weeks, Jun 8 to 14 to Aug 31 to Sep 6, 2026 | The same wellness spa | Map pack, 85 terms | Visible three 12 to 36; first place 5 to 10 |
| 14 weeks, May 28 to Jun 3 to Aug 31 to Sep 6, 2026 | Mobile outboard repair, measured 19 miles from base | Map pack, 58 terms | First place 2 to 9; visible three 5 to 12 |
| 6 months, Sep 18 to 24, 2025 to Mar 7 to 13, 2026 | Family law firm, Montana | Map pack, 70 terms | Visible three 4 to 53; first place 0 to 20 (organic softened over the same period) |
| 7 months, Feb 1 to Aug 27, 2026 | Bathtub reglazing, Southern California (about 41 miles by road from the target city, no map pack available) | Google organic, four commercial keywords | Average position 5.0 to 1.75; all four in the top three |
| 7 months, Jan 21 to 27 to Aug 31 to Sep 6, 2026 | Cell tower lease consultancy, national | Google organic, 39 original terms (83 tracked by September) | Top ten 0 to 30; average position 82.8 to 25.0 |
| 12 months, Sep 17 to 23, 2025 to Aug 27 to Sep 2, 2026 | Special education law firm, measured statewide across California | Google organic, 26 terms | Top three 1 to 11; top ten 6 to 20; average 49.9 to 14.1 |
Read down the table and the pattern is plain. Five weeks is enough for a large move where the pages were installed rather than recommended and the starting positions were already on page two or three; the outboard business, the spa and the manufacturer all show it. The map pack takes longer to move when the business is far from the search point or the market is contested, which is why the Montana family firm’s record runs six months and the outboard business’s map-pack row runs fourteen weeks beside its five-week organic row. The statewide record and the 41-mile record are the slow ones, because a position earned against every competitor in a state, or against in-city competitors from outside the city, is the hardest kind, and they took seven months to a year.
What happens week by week, in the order it actually happens
The sequence below is how AI Search Engine Optimization runs every engagement, and it is the reason the five-week rows in the table exist. Weeks one and two are the audit and the keyword map: the market and the competitors already ranking are measured first, the site is diagnosed against them, and every search is assigned to one page so that no two pages compete for it. Weeks two to four are the installs: the money pages are rebuilt or written, structured data and internal links are put in place, and every change is read back from the live page before it is reported. Weeks three to six are where the first movement shows, because Google re-reads pages it already trusts within days and re-ranks them within weeks; this is where the outboard business’s average moved from 8.0 to 2.5. Weeks six to twelve are the map pack and the second tier of organic terms, as the entity signals and the citations catch up with the pages. Months three to twelve are the contested organic terms, the statewide positions and the terms that were not in the top hundred when tracking began.
- Weeks 1 to 2: measure and map. Competitor field, daily tracking switched on, keyword map with one page per search. Nothing has moved yet; the baseline is the point.
- Weeks 2 to 4: install. Pages rebuilt on the site, schema, internal links, technical fixes, each verified live. The manufacturer’s 52-to-89 window began here.
- Weeks 3 to 6: first movement. Pages Google already trusts re-rank first. The outboard business’s six commercial terms moved from 8.0 to 2.5 between August 1 and August 27.
- Weeks 6 to 12: the map pack and the second tier. Entity and citation work catch up; the spa’s map pack moved 12 to 36 of 85 across twelve weeks while its organic first places moved 2 to 18 in five.
- Months 3 to 12: the hard positions. Contested organic terms, statewide scope, distance from the search point. The California firm’s top-three count moved 1 to 11 of 26 over a year.
Phil Belleville, who has worked in SEO since 1995, sets the order for each engagement from the audit; the sequence is the same, the pages and the weeks differ.
The four things that decide which row your business lands in
Four measurable things decide how long SEO takes for a given business, and AI Search Engine Optimization reads all four in the audit before saying a number. The starting position: a term at position 25 can reach page one in weeks, a term not in the top 100 usually cannot, which is why the cell tower consultancy’s record (average position 82.8 at the start) runs seven months and the outboard business’s (six terms averaging 8.0) runs four weeks. The surface: organic pages re-rank on content and links; the map pack moves on entity signals, reviews and proximity, and it moves later. The distance and scope: the outboard business’s map-pack row is measured 19 miles from its address and the special education firm’s organic row is measured statewide, and both took longer than the same businesses’ local rows. The competition: a small-market map pack like the Montana spa’s moves on a few dozen changes; a contested category like family law took the Montana firm six months to reach 53 of 70 visible positions.
- Starting position decides the first month: page-two terms move first, unranked terms last.
- Surface decides the second and third month: organic before map pack, map pack before contested organic.
- Distance and scope decide the tail: measured far from the address, or statewide, add months.
- Competition scales everything, which is why the audit measures the field before the timeline is stated.
The clock nobody mentions: getting indexed at all
A page cannot rank or be cited until Google has decided to store it, and in 2026 that decision is the slowest part of the timeline for many sites, including this one. AI Search Engine Optimization rebuilt this site in August 2026 and published a run of supporting posts in early September; two weeks later, 51 of the site’s 67 live pages were still not in Google’s index, and the crawl log showed Google re-reading the pages it already held rather than fetching the new ones. The cause was not technical. The posts had been written to the same length and pattern with no first-party data, and Google’s indexing system now declines pages that add nothing to what it already holds. The remedy, applied post by post from September 19 onward, was to rewrite each one around a dated measurement of its own, which is the standard this page is written to. The lesson for any owner’s timeline: a page that is not worth indexing has a timeline of never, and the “three to six months” advice assumes the page was worth indexing in the first place.
- Check the Indexing report before the ranking report; a page in “crawled, currently not indexed” is waiting on quality, not on time.
- A batch of similar pages published together lengthens the clock for all of them.
- Resubmitting does not shorten it; rewriting does.
How long AI answers take, measured on this site
AI answers move on a faster clock than rankings once a page is indexed, because the assistants retrieve pages live and rewrite their answers each time. AI Search Engine Optimization measures its own AI visibility weekly, 26 buyer questions across six AI platforms, and the first September reading found its pages cited from only two URLs; in the seven days to September 16, 2026, the same measurement counted twelve answers citing three of its pages, in the week its page openers were rewritten to answer the questions directly. The same measurement found Google’s own documentation cited in 21 of the 26 questions and no agency website in more than 7.3 percent of answers, which is the field any business page competes with. So the AI timeline is short at the end and long at the start: days from a readable, indexed page to a citation, but weeks or months of indexing and entity work before the page is retrievable at all. The AI answer benchmark page carries the full measurement.
What to watch in the weeks before the rankings move
The rankings are the last thing to move, so AI Search Engine Optimization reports three earlier signals in every weekly review. The Indexing report in Search Console, because a page that has moved from “discovered” to “indexed” has cleared the slowest gate. Impressions before clicks, because Google shows a page at position 30 to a handful of searchers before it shows it at position 5 to hundreds, and a rise in impressions with flat clicks is the week before the rise in clicks. And the per-platform AI counts, because a citation can appear in an AI answer before the page has a page-one ranking, as it did here. What a review does not do is call one good day a trend: every figure in the records above is a seven-day average, and a single day’s jump is reported as a sample until the week confirms it. The metrics a report should show are set out separately, with their denominators.
When the timeline says to change course
A timeline is only useful if it tells the owner when something is wrong, so AI Search Engine Optimization sets three checkpoints in every written scope. At six weeks, the installed pages should show first movement on the terms that started on page two or three; if they do not, the diagnosis was wrong or the pages were not actually installed, and the review says which. At twelve weeks, the map pack should show visible-three gains where the business is near the search point; if it does not, the entity and review work is the problem. At six months, the contested terms should be in the top ten; if the whole set is flat, the market was mismeasured or the site has a trust problem the audit missed. Each checkpoint is a decision, written down in advance, and every engagement behind the records on this page is scoped with those checkpoints in the agreement, so that “how long does SEO take” has an answer the owner can hold the agency to.
Questions about how long SEO takes
How long does SEO take to work?
SEO shows its first ranking movement four to six weeks after the pages are installed, moves a local business into the visible map pack over five to twelve weeks, and holds contested top-three organic positions in six to twelve months. AI Search Engine Optimization publishes dated records for each: a five-week organic window with top-three terms moving from 0 to 10 of 68, a five-week map-pack window moving from 64 to 108 of 123, and a twelve-month statewide window moving from 1 to 11 of 26.
How long does local SEO take to show in the map pack?
Local SEO moves the map pack in five to twelve weeks when the business is near the search point and the market is not crowded, and longer when it is far away or contested. AI Search Engine Optimization’s records show a wellness spa moving from 12 to 36 of 85 visible positions in twelve weeks and a family law firm in a contested market moving from 4 to 53 of 70 over six months; a result measured 19 miles from the business’s base took fourteen weeks for 5 to 12.
How long does SEO take for a new website?
A new website waits on indexing before any timeline starts, and in 2026 that wait can be weeks for pages Google judges as adding nothing new. AI Search Engine Optimization’s own rebuilt site had 51 of 67 pages unindexed two weeks after publication until the posts were rewritten around first-party data; a new site with pages worth indexing follows the same four-to-six-week clock for first movement once they are indexed, with the contested terms taking months.
What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?
The 80/20 rule in SEO is the observation that a small share of pages and terms produces most of the results, so the work is ordered by which pages can move first and matter most. AI Search Engine Optimization applies it through the audit and the keyword map: the terms already on page two or three and the money pages that produce inquiries come first, because they move in weeks, and the unranked and contested terms come after, because they take months.
Does AI SEO take longer than traditional SEO?
AI SEO takes longer at the start and less time at the end: a page has to be indexed and the business has to be verifiable as an entity before an AI answer will retrieve it, which can take weeks or months, but once it is retrievable a citation can appear in days. AI Search Engine Optimization’s weekly measurement moved from two cited URLs to twelve answers across three pages within the week its page openers were rewritten in September 2026.
What should I see in the first month of SEO?
In the first month you should see the audit and the keyword map delivered, the first pages installed and verified on the live site, and daily tracking running from day one, with the first movement on page-two terms toward the end of the month. AI Search Engine Optimization’s outboard repair record shows six commercial terms moving from an average of 8.0 to 2.5 between August 1 and August 27, 2026, which is the first-month result when the pages are installed rather than recommended.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
SEO is worth it in 2026 for businesses whose buyers search or ask an AI assistant before they call, because the pages that rank are the pages the AI answers retrieve from, and the records above show positions still moving in weeks on installed pages. AI Search Engine Optimization measures both surfaces, reports visits, AI citations and inquiries as three different things, and puts checkpoints in writing so the owner can see whether the work is paying at six weeks, twelve weeks and six months.
