GEO Audit

It Checks What an SEO Audit Never Did

Most business owners have had an SEO audit. Almost none have had a GEO audit, and many who have been sold one received an SEO audit with a new cover page. The two overlap, but they answer different questions: an SEO audit asks whether Google can find, read and rank your pages; a GEO audit asks whether the systems that write answers can identify, trust and quote your business. This is what each one checks, where they meet, and what neither can tell you on its own.

What a GEO audit is

A GEO audit is a structured check of whether a business can be found, verified and cited by the AI answer engines: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. It measures the evidence those engines gather before they name a business, which is different from the evidence a search engine gathers before it ranks a page. The name comes from generative engine optimization (GEO), the work of becoming a source the engines draw on, and the audit is the diagnosis that comes before that work.

Three things separate it from the audits businesses are used to. It examines the business as an entity, not only the site as a set of pages. It tests the answer engines directly, with dated questions, rather than inferring from rankings. And it reads the sources the engines consult about you, most of which are not on your website at all.

What an SEO audit checks, and a GEO audit inherits

None of the classic checks go away, because every answer engine starts from pages a search engine can already reach. An SEO audit confirms that the site can be crawled and indexed, that each page carries one clear title and one H1, that the internal links route authority to the pages that matter, that speed and mobile rendering are sound, that no two pages compete for the same search, and that the site’s rankings and links are moving in the right direction. A GEO audit assumes all of that has been done and checks it again only where the answer engines behave differently, which is more often than most people expect.

The clearest example is crawl access. A robots file that welcomes Google can still shut out the crawlers the AI platforms send, and a hosting firewall can block them silently at the datacenter level in a way no robots rule reveals. An SEO audit reports the site as crawlable and is correct. A GEO audit probes each AI crawler live, with its real identity, and reports which of them actually got in.

What a GEO audit checks that an SEO audit never did

Six checks have no equivalent in a conventional SEO audit. Each answers a question an answer engine asks before it names a business.

Check The question the engine is asking What the audit measures
Entity record Does this business exist as one clear thing? Google’s public Knowledge Graph entry for the business and for each competitor: whether one exists, its confidence score, and the description Google holds
Entity consistency Do the site and the profiles agree? Name, address, services and founder facts compared across the site, the business profiles and the structured data, with every contradiction listed
AI crawler access Can I read the site at all? A live probe of each platform’s crawler against the site, catching firewall and host blocks that robots rules cannot show
Extractability Is there a passage I can lift whole? Every money page scored for a block that stands alone, makes a specific and verifiable claim, and is twinned in structured data
Citation footprint Do sources I already trust name this business? Which best-of lists, review platforms, industry sites and community threads the engines cite in the niche, and which of them mention you
Observed visibility Do I name this business today? Citation counts per platform for the site and its competitors, plus a live probe of the buying questions that matter, recorded with the platform, the wording and the date

The last row is the one most audits skip and the one that matters most to an owner. Everything else on the list predicts whether an engine will cite you. Observed visibility records whether it does, and it turns the audit from an opinion into a baseline the next review can be measured against.

What both audits check, and read differently

Structured data appears in both, but the standard is different. An SEO audit asks whether the markup validates and earns rich results. A GEO audit asks whether every human-facing fact on the page has a machine-readable twin, and whether one organization record holds the whole site together, because an answer engine assembles the business from whatever page it lands on. Markup that passes the first test and fails the second is common, and it is one of the most frequent findings on sites that have already been audited.

Expertise and trust appear in both as well. An SEO audit looks for author bylines and about pages. A GEO audit measures first-hand experience, named expertise and trust markers against the three competitors that already rank and get cited, page by page and site-wide, because the engines apply a higher threshold than a ranking system does: an AI answer stands behind one or two sources, and it does not name a business it cannot verify.

Topical depth is the third shared check. Where an SEO audit counts pages and keywords, a GEO audit measures what the engines associate with an authority in the niche and how completely the site expresses it, against two or three competitors. A site that clearly knows its subject is the site whose pages get cited when a buyer asks a question.

What neither audit can tell you

Neither one can promise a citation. The platforms control their answers, and the same question asked twice can return different sources. Neither one can tell you how many inquiries a citation is worth; that comes from your own records, kept separately from the visibility data. And neither one is finished when the report is delivered. An SEO audit that stays in a document changes nothing, and a GEO audit is the same: the entity pages, the answer blocks, the structured data and the crawler fixes have to be installed on the site and verified live, then re-measured on a fixed schedule, before the audit has earned its price.

How to audit a website for GEO best practices

If you want to read your own site the way an engine does, five checks tell you most of what a first pass would. Search Google for your business name and see whether a knowledge panel appears and what it says; that is the entity record, or its absence. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode three of the questions your buyers ask before they hire someone in your category, and write down who each one names and cites, with the date. Read your top service page and find the single passage that answers the buyer’s main question completely; if you have to assemble it from three paragraphs, so does the engine. Check whether the facts on that page match the facts in your business profiles word for word. And search for the best-of lists and review platforms in your niche to see whether you appear on the ones the engines are quoting.

Those five checks will show you whether there is a problem. They will not show you its size, its causes or its order of repair, which is what the full audit is for.

Why we run both as one audit

Our AI visibility audit and AI SEO audit is one engagement because the two sets of checks depend on each other: an answer engine cannot cite a page Google cannot crawl, and a well-ranked page with no entity behind it goes unnamed. Nine diagnoses run in a fixed order across the whole site and against the competitors that already rank and get cited, from the crawl and the keyword map through the entity record, the crawler probe, the extractability score and the citation footprint, to a baseline of observed AI visibility recorded per platform, question and date. Every finding arrives with the exact change it calls for, and the changes are installed on your WordPress site and verified live rather than left in a document. It is more work than an SEO audit and more work than a GEO audit, which is why it finds what each of them misses. The first step is a conversation with Phil about your site and your market.
